Newly discovered Final Fantasy 7 glitch finally lets you save beloved characters

A newly discovered glitch in the original Final Fantasy 7 has been discovered, allowing players to skip large portions of the game and get straight to its biggest twist.

I’m being intentionally vague here for spoiler reasons, but if you’re familiar with the game at all, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Indeed, it’s surprising that 26 years later players are still finding new ways to skip games.

So you’ve guessed I’m talking about Alice now. This new glitch lets you finally let her live.

Well, sort of. Essentially, you force her to witness her own death and fight her murderer’s mother.

As Final Fantasy speedrunner Luzbel shared on X/Twitter, the jump was discovered by AceZephyr and Kuma.

This glitch does not use any form of cheating. Instead, players can take advantage of a complex mechanic where the game stores information about the terrain every time a chocobo is mounted and detached on the world map. With this, it’s possible to travel directly across the world from the early days of the game to the forgotten capital at the end of the first disc.

Of course, the player level will be quite low for this part of the game. But with Aerith joining the team, there’s a chance she’ll witness her own death and then join in the ensuing battle with Jenova.

However, Luzbell noted that if Aerith shows up at a party she’s not supposed to be at, the game will soft-lock during cutscenes. Still, Alice’s saviors can finally rejoice!

This year’s Final Fantasy 7 Reborn tackles the same part of the game as part of a trilogy of remasters. While I won’t spoil Alice’s fate here, the way it was handled at the time proved controversial.

Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase said last month that the third installment in the trilogy would not “betray fans of the original.”

“There are things we feel we can only do now in a remaster project to bring new joy, new satisfaction to players who are playing this game 27 years later,” he said. “We hope players will be able to experience this soon.”
